All Hair and No Tits 1
Medium
Oil on canvas
Date
November, 2024
All Hair and No Tits is a celebration of bold and unapologetic femininity in its rawest form, challenging the quiet, restricted expectations often imposed on women. This oil painting collection contrasts the surreal, electrified essence of feminine power with the allure of material desires, creating a vibrant dialogue around consumption, identity, and rebellion.
The collection features three surreal portraits of girls, who are depicted with bright, saturated colours, and an intensely contrasted palette which creates a neon and dreamlike atmosphere. Each girl’s expressions and actions subvert norms: one bites into an overflowing sandwich; the other inhales freely from a mysterious golden jar; and the last gulps wine in a full-bodied and unrestrained motion. Their forms are accented with glowing and electric colours, intensifying their presence as though they are characters from a party scene, with each pulse of colour embodying the intoxication and freedom of that experience.
All Hair and No Tits plays on the concept of consumption of objects, people and experiences. The exaggerated features and colours of the portraits immerse the viewer in the world of these party girls, where pleasure is pursued without apology. Such duality between the girls and their objects of pleasure mirrors the consumption of female identity itself: society often wants the gloss and allure without acknowledging the complexity of gender expression. By creating such a juxtaposition, the collection invites viewers to question what is really being desired or consumed, whether it's the raw individuality of these women or merely a surface-level allure.
All Hair and No Tits is imagined through a lens of social expectations around femininity, politeness, and self-restraint. Through humour, vibrant colour, and rebelliousness, my work defies such norms, drawing on the chaotic beauty and fleeting nature of girlhood. The collection is a reaction against the pressure to present a ‘palatable’ femininity: one that is quiet, small, and contained. By transforming and distorting my reference images through Adobe Firefly, I have created a psychedelic lens, a realm where femininity is exaggerated, effervescent, and unrestricted. Here, women can exist as loud, fearless, and chaotic beings.
I aim to use art to reflect and challenge how contemporary culture polices women’s behaviour, scrutinizing how self-surveillance limits ‘acceptable’ actions. By amplifying the voices and personas of these women, All Hair and No Tits explores how societal expectations shape and constrain behaviour, inviting the viewer to see through the lens of joy, chaos, and rebellious self-expression.
All Hair and No Tits is a rallying cry for feminine exuberance: a call to embrace the raw, graceless, and joyful sides of ourselves. It revels in youth, effeminacy, and humour, urging the viewer to experience the art as both participant and observer in the vivacious, unrestrained world of these party girls. All Hair and No Tits refuses the notion that femininity must be contained, instead portraying women who are powerful, visceral, and, most importantly, unapologetically themselves.
